Join us on this tour of Écija's churches and discover its rich ecclesiastical heritage. These churches reflect the history of this Sevillian town.
Tour Details
Écija once had 14 churches and 18 convents. We will meet at the Plaza de Santiago to commence the tour, exploring the religious architecture of this town in Sevilla province.
The first stop will be the Church of Santiago, noted for its Gothic-Mudéjar style. After observing its facade, we will view its altarpiece, significant within the Archdiocese of Seville.
Next, we will proceed to Plaza de España, where remnants of an early episcopal structure were unearthed, and examine the exterior of the Church of Santa Barbara, constructed atop a Roman temple.
We will then visit the Church of Santa Maria, recognized for its bell tower, reminiscent of Seville’s Giralda. This church holds notable historical significance and features archaeological pieces in its courtyard.
Continuing, we will visit the Church of Los Descalzos, a remarkable example of Baroque architecture in Andalusia. Its interior is particularly noteworthy, despite the plain exterior.
To conclude the tour, we will pass the Convent of Las Marroquíes and look at the Santa Cruz Parish Church, as well as the Church of San Pablo and Church of Santo Domingo before returning to the starting point.
This guided tour lasts approximately 2.5 hours.
