Discover the Medieval Kingdom of Northumbria by exploring the ruined castles, quaint villages, and wild coastline of North-East England on this day trip from Edinburgh.
Holy Island & Alnwick Castle Day Trip
The day begins in Edinburgh city centre, where you will board a luxury coach heading south into northeast England. The route features scenic coastal views of the rugged landscape.
Your first stop is Holy Island, with a history dating back to the 6th century. Connected to Lindisfarne by a tidal causeway, it has been a pilgrimage destination since the Middle Ages. Here, you can explore the Priory, the ancient Castle, and sample the famous mead brewed by monks.
Next, you'll head to Alnwick, a lively market town, famous for the 11th-century Alnwick Castle. You will have time to stroll around the town center or explore the castle complex and its gardens, including the Grand Cascade, which was a filming location for Harry Potter.
On your return, you will cross the River Tweed into Coldstream, a historic town on the English-Scottish border. If time permits, a stop at the well-preserved Flodden Field, site of the 1513 battle where King James IV of Scots died, will be included.
At the end of the day, you will arrive back in Edinburgh around 6:15 pm.
