Laguna Torre Hike
El Chaltén is recognized as the National Capital of Trekking in Argentina. The hike starts at 9 a.m. at the San Martín Lake Office, progressing on a 5.5-mile trekking route to Laguna Torre.
The route includes crossing Antarctic beech woodland and ascending to the Margarita Waterfall viewpoint, offering views of the canyon formed by the Fitz Roy River.
Continuing towards another viewpoint reveals a panorama of Cerro Torre, the second highest peak in Glaciers National Park, at over 10,000 feet, second only to Mount Fitz Roy. A break will be taken here to enjoy the mountain and glacier scenery.
Reaching Laguna Torre involves a scenic two-hour walk where bird species such as the Magellanic woodpecker may be spotted. Arriving at the lake provides time to photograph the ice tongues extending into the waters. A lakeside picnic will precede the return walk, concluding the hike between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. depending on the group's pace.
How difficult is the hiking route?
The hiking route to Laguna Torre is moderately difficult and requires a good level of physical condition. The 4.3-mile trek takes around three hours and is not recommended for individuals with cardiac or respiratory problems.
