On this hiking route up the Tajogaite Volcano, we'll have views of the landscape formed during the 19th September 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption.
Tajogaite Volcano Hike
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the El Paso Tourist Information Office (CIT Insular) to commence our hiking route around the Cumbre Vieja volcano. We will discuss recent volcanic episodes on La Palma and the changes since the 2021 September eruption.
After our presentations, we will take a taxi to Cumbre Vieja Natural Park and arrive at Llano del Jable, at 1200 metres (4000 feet) high. We will explain the formation process of La Palma and El Hierro, the youngest Canary Island.
We will then walk through ash and lapilli, learning about vegetation damage and regeneration efforts of the Canary Pine, as well as the towns most impacted.
After walking 2.5 km (1.5 mi), we will be about 300 metres (984 feet) from the Tajogaite Volcano crater, witnessing the lava flow that altered the Aridane Valley landscape. The tour concludes with a return along the same path, totaling 5 km (3.1 mi) with a duration of 3 hours.
7-Kilometre Hike
For a more challenging option, you may opt for the 7 km (4.3 mi), medium-difficulty hike, suitable for children aged 10 and above, which takes us closer to the crater.
After arriving at Llano del Jable, we will follow the first part of the trail, then take a local route leading to an old area of fig, mulberry, and chestnut fields, followed by a descent down a steep path filled with pyroclasts, reaching the edge of the volcanic vents. We will return by the eastern part of the volcanic cone, spending a total of 4 hours including vehicle travel.
Difficulty Level
The 5 km (3.1 mi) route requires regular hiking or good physical condition. The 7 km (4.3 mi) route demands better fitness. Both routes traverse sandy terrain, and summer heat may increase difficulty.
Children may join under the supervision of parents who must assess their capability. For the 5 km (3.1 mi) route, participants must be age 5 or older. The 7 km (4.3 mi) route is recommended for ages 10 and up.
