On this hiking route up the Tajogaite Volcano, we'll have views of the landscape formed in the 19th September 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption.
Tajogaite Volcano Hike
We'll meet at the El Paso Tourist Information Office (CIT Insular) to start the hiking route around the Cumbre Vieja volcano. During the activity, we'll discuss recent volcanic episodes on La Palma and the changes since the 2021 September eruption.
After presentations, we'll board a taxi to the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, arriving at Llano del Jable in El Paso, located at 1200 metres (4000 feet) high. We will explain the formation process of La Palma and El Hierro, the youngest of the Canary Islands.
We will walk through ash and lapilli, discussing how vegetation was affected and the regeneration of the Canary Pine. We will also cover the worst affected towns.
After walking 2.5 km (1.5 mi), we'll be about 300 metres (984 feet) from the crater of the Tajogaite Volcano. We will see the lava flow that impacted various populated areas in the Aridane Valley, altering the island's landscape and residents' lives. We will conclude the tour with a return walk, totaling 5 km (3.1 mi), and after 3 hours, we will say our goodbyes.
7-Kilometre Hike
For a more challenging option, consider the 7 km (4.3 mi), medium-difficulty hike, suitable for children aged 10 and over, bringing us closer to the crater.
After reaching Llano del Jable, we'll take a detour down a local route to an old area of fig, mulberry, and chestnut fields. We will then descend a steep path filled with pyroclasts to the edge of the volcanic vents. We will return to the starting point, completing the hike in 3.5 hours and arriving back after a total of 4 hours.
Difficulty Level
The 5 km (3.1 mi) route is recommended for those who hike regularly or are in good physical condition. The 7 km (4.3 mi) route requires better physical condition. Both routes are on sandy terrain, and summer temperatures may increase difficulty.
Children can participate under the responsibility of their parents, who must assess their ability. For the 5 km route, children aged 5 and above can join. The minimum age for the 7 km route is 10 years.
