Tajogaite Volcano Hike

On this hiking route up the Tajogaite Volcano, we'll explore the landscape altered by the 19th September 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption.

Tajogaite Volcano Hike

We will meet at the El Paso Tourist Information Office (CIT Insular) to start our hike around the Cumbre Vieja volcano. We will discuss the recent volcanic episodes on La Palma and the changes since the 2021 September eruption.

After presentations, we'll take a taxi to the Cumbre Vieja Natural Park, arriving at Llano del Jable in El Paso at 1200 metres (4000 feet). We will explain the formation process of La Palma and El Hierro, the youngest Canary Island.

We will then walk through ash and lapilli, discussing vegetation damage and regeneration efforts, particularly of the Canary Pine. We will also highlight the worst affected towns.

After walking 2.5 kilometres (1.5 miles), we will be approximately 300 metres (984 feet) from the Tajogaite Volcano crater, offering views of the lava flow that changed the Aridane Valley and many lives.

We will conclude the tour by returning the same route, totaling 5 kilometres (3 miles). After 3 hours, we will say our goodbyes.

7-Kilometre Hike

For a more challenging option, consider the 7-kilometre (4.3-mile), medium-difficulty hike, bringing us closer to the crater.

After reaching Llano del Jable, we will take a detour down a local route leading to old fig, mulberry, and chestnut fields. We will then descend a steep path filled with pyroclasts to the edge of the volcanic vents. Expect stunning views of vibrant colours and fumaroles.

We will return to the starting point by traversing the eastern part of the volcanic cone. After 3.5 hours, we will return to our initial meeting point within a total of 4 hours.

Difficulty Level

This activity is suitable for those in good physical shape or regular hikers. The total hike is 5 km (3 miles) over sandy terrain, with potential challenges from high summer temperatures.

Children may participate under their parents' responsibility. For children aged 3 to 5 years, a baby carrier is required.
