Explore El Puerto de Santa María, the city where Christopher Columbus' first expedition to the Americas set sail and discover the houses where the merchants lived.

Merchants History Tour

At the indicated time, we'll meet in the Plaza de Alfonso X El Sabio square to begin our tour of El Puerto de Santa María from the 17th and 18th centuries. We will explore the historic significance of the city, particularly how "Los cargadores a Indias," the merchants of the Americas, contributed to its prominence as a crucial export port.

Our itinerary includes visits to the Castle of San Marcos, built on the site of an old Arab mosque, and the Palacio de Anaríbar, a residence of a notable merchant. We will learn why El Puerto de Santa María is referred to as the "city of a hundred palaces" as we navigate through the city center, past the old customs house, and the Iglesia Mayor Prioral, which is associated with the Dukes of Medinaceli.

The tour will also cover stories of distinguished merchants like Carvajal-Medrano, the Marquise of Candia, and Admiral Valdivieso. Additionally, we will visit the Casa de los Leones to understand its historical significance. The tour concludes after 2 hours.
