Tour Details
We'll meet in the Plaça del Parc at the indicated time to start the free tour, exploring important corners of the city, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The first stop will be the Municipal Park, home to the famous 'Palmeral'. This palm grove is the largest in Europe, covering 1.4 sq miles (3.5 km2) and symbolizing the Arabic history of the Iberian Peninsula. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it features 200,000 palm trees.
Next, we'll visit the Palace of Altamira, which has served various purposes over time, including a fort and a prison, and is now a museum. It is noted for being one of the best-preserved defensive complexes in Alicante province.
We will then walk down Calle Mayor to the Mercado Central, where ancient ruins of Arab baths are located. Afterward, we’ll proceed to the city's Town Hall, a 15th century building, to admire its intricate facade while noting the ceramic drawings typical of the region.
Next is Plaza de la Glorieta to learn about Elche's most famous woman. We will then visit the Santa Maria Basilica, associated with the second UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Each August, the event 'El Misteri d'Elx' reenacts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, dating back to the 15th century.
The tour will conclude after 1.5 hours.
