Tour Details
We'll meet in the Plaça del Parc at the indicated time, and from here we'll start the free tour and explore the most important corners of the city, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The first stop will be the Municipal Park, home to the famous 'Palmeral'. This palm grove is the largest in Europe, covering 1.4 sq miles (3.5 km2) and symbolizes the Arabic history throughout the Iberian Peninsula. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it has 200,000 palm trees.
Next, we'll visit the Palace of Altamira, which has served as a fort, textile factory, prison, and now a museum. It is one of the best-preserved defensive complexes in the Alicante province.
We'll walk down Calle Mayor to the Mercado Central, where ancient ruins of Arab baths can be found among the stalls. Then, we'll visit the city's Town Hall, a significant 15th century building, and admire its intricate facade and ceramic drawings typical of the region.
Next, we'll head to Plaza de la Glorieta to learn about a notable woman of Elche. Following this, we'll go to the Santa Maria Basilica to explore the second UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The famous event 'El Misteri d'Elx' occurs in August, reenacting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, dating back to the 15th century.
The tour concludes after 1.5 hours.
