Guided Tour of Estremoz
At the prearranged time, we will gather at the Tourist Office of Estremoz to embark on an intriguing guided tour of this noteworthy city in the Alentejo region.
Our journey will take us along Rossio Marquês de Pombal street, where we will appreciate the elegance of its marble houses. The abundance of local quarries has significantly shaped the architectural character of the area. Notably, Estremoz ranks among the top marble producers globally.
Next, our route will lead us to the lake and fountain of Gadanha, where we will delve into its historical significance for the military during the 18th century. Following this, we will pause at the pillory, a grim site where death sentences were carried out in the age of Manuel I.
Our itinerary then takes us to the imposing medieval castle of Estremoz, where we will uncover the narratives of the royalty and aristocracy that once resided within its walls as we admire its striking facade. Pay special attention to the keep, a remarkable marble structure soaring to a height of 27 meters.
We will also explore the Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Socorro, a 17th-century church associated with the Order of the Discalced Augustinians.
After two and a half hours of discovering the rich heritage of Estremoz, we will conclude our excursion, returning to our initial meeting point.
