Embark on a kayaking adventure across Lake Mapourika in Franz Josef! Navigate through glacial waters, explore ancient rainforests, and encounter native wildlife.

Tour Overview

At the designated time, we will convene at 30 Main Road to embark on our kayak journey on Lake Mapourika, a striking glacial lake shaped by the Franz Josef Glacier. After a brief introduction, we will hop into a vehicle that will transport us to our kayaking launch site, where we will begin our exploration of the Westland Tai Poutini National Park!

Before we set out, important safety instructions will be provided, ensuring that everyone knows how to kayak securely for an enjoyable experience. Once prepared, we'll step into our kayaks and set forth onto the water.

During our outing, we will navigate the lake and revel in breathtaking views of the majestic Southern Alps and the Franz Josef Glacier. Guided expertly, we will glide along a secluded estuary, surrounded by the vibrant ancient rainforest of the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary.

As we paddle, our guide will enlighten us with intriguing facts about the local biodiversity. We will venture through pristine Jurassic rainforest and untouched wilderness, making it ideal for capturing stunning photographs. Be sure to have your cameras ready!

After an invigorating 3-hour experience along the serene lake, we will conclude our tour by returning to the starting point.

Optional Nature Walk

Enrich your time in Franz Josef by adding a nature walk to your kayaking tour! Immerse yourself in ancient rainforests and engage with nature like never before.

Following the same itinerary outlined earlier, midway through our kayaking journey, we’ll embark on a trek along a custom-designed rainforest trail within the Okarito Kiwi Conservation area. This trail offers opportunities to learn about kiwi conservation efforts and to spot various native bird species.

This extended experience concludes back at our meeting point after a total of 4 hours.
