Join us for a kayaking tour along Lake Mapourika in Franz Josef! Paddle through glacial waters, discover ancient rainforests, and spot native wildlife.

Tour Details

We'll meet at the indicated time at 30 Main Road for an exciting kayak tour on Lake Mapourika, which formed from the Franz Josef Glacier. Participants will be transported to the launch point to explore Westland Tai Poutini National Park.

Prior to the tour, we will review safety guidelines and kayaking techniques to ensure a safe experience. Then, we'll embark on our kayaking adventure.

During the tour, paddlers will enjoy panoramic views of the Southern Alps and Franz Josef Glacier, navigating a narrow estuary within the ancient rainforest of the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary. The guide will share insights into the area's biodiversity as we pass through untouched Jurassic rainforest and pristine wilderness, providing opportunities for photography.

After 3 hours of kayaking on the tranquil lake, we will return to the meeting point.

Nature Walk

Enhance your experience by adding a nature walk to your kayak tour! This option allows you to explore ancient rainforests and connect with nature.

The itinerary will follow the same route, but halfway through the kayak tour, participants will embark on a walk along a custom-built rainforest trail within the Okarito Kiwi Conservation area, learning about kiwi conservation efforts and observing native bird species.

This tour concludes back at the meeting point after a total of 4 hours.
