Franz Josef Kayak Tour

Join us for a kayaking tour along Lake Mapourika in Franz Josef! Paddle through glacial waters, discover ancient rainforests and spot native wildlife.

Tour Details

We will meet at the indicated time at 30 Main Road for a kayak tour on Lake Mapourika, a glacial lake formed by the Franz Josef Glacier. Participants will board a vehicle to reach the launch point for exploration of the Westland Tai Poutini National Park.

Prior to departure, safety guidelines will be reviewed and kayaking instructions provided, ensuring a safe experience. Following this, participants will enter their kayaks.

The kayaking experience includes paddling through the lake with views of the Southern Alps and Franz Josef Glacier. Guided exploration will lead us through a narrow estuary within the ancient rainforest of the Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary, with insights into the area's biodiversity. There will be opportunities for photography in this untouched Jurassic rainforest.

After 3 hours of kayaking on the tranquil lake, the tour will conclude back at the meeting point.

Nature Walk

Enhance your experience by adding a nature walk to your kayak tour. Participants will explore ancient rainforests and connect with nature.

The itinerary remains the same, but midway through the kayak tour, we will embark on a walk along a custom-built rainforest trail within the Okarito Kiwi Conservation area. This segment includes insights into kiwi conservation efforts and opportunities to spot native bird species.

The tour will end back at the meeting point after a total duration of 4 hours.
