Activity Overview



Our day begins at 30 Main Road in Franz Josef, where we convene before traveling to our launch site. Here, we will board our vessel for a scenic expedition across Lake Mapourika, situated within the stunning Westland Tai Poutini National Park.



While gliding along the tranquil waters of Lake Mapourika, enjoy breathtaking views of pristine wilderness, characterized by verdant rainforests and an array of native bird species. The boat features enclosed cabins for comfort during cooler weather and outdoor viewing decks allowing for an immersive experience with the striking landscapes of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.



We will navigate through the Okatarito Kiwi Sanctuary, a revered habitat for New Zealand’s iconic kiwi bird. As we traverse the crystal-clear lake, be prepared to spot these beloved native birds in their natural habitat.



Our knowledgeable local guide will accompany us, sharing insightful commentary about the distinct ecosystems that contribute to the World Heritage designation of this area—including its unique temperate rainforest within a glacial environment. You will gain a deeper understanding of the diverse plant and animal life that characterize Westland.



As our journey returns to the dock, embrace the serene beauty of this unspoiled environment, listening to the calls of local wildlife and other native birds.



After two hours of immersion in nature, we conclude our tour back at the starting location.

Exploration on Foot



Enhance your adventure by including a 1.5-hour guided nature walk through this extraordinary rainforest!



Post-cruise, we will embark on a captivating rainforest hike that takes you back to the Jurassic period. As we wander through this ancient landscape, stay alert for different bird species and the distinctive local flora and fauna flourishing here.



If fortune favors us, our guide may also highlight some edible plant species along the journey, allowing you to experience a taste of the region's natural offerings. Additionally, there may be opportunities to collect flax flowers, serving as a lovely memento from your adventure!
