Immerse yourself in a day trip to encounter the giant tortoises at El Chato Ranch, exploring the conservation centers and volcanic terrains of Santa Cruz Island in the Galápagos. This journey promises to be truly memorable!

Giant Tortoise Exploration at El Chato Ranch

At the predetermined hour, our team will meet you at your accommodation in Santa Cruz Island to commence this adventure. Excitement awaits as we gather before embarking towards the island's highlands.

Our first destination will be Los Gemelos, a pair of craters resulting from the collapse of expansive air chambers beneath the earth's surface. In this unique location, we will have the chance to explore the renowned Escalesia Forest, which is native to the Galápagos and serves as a preferred environment for Darwin's finches. Additionally, we may spot other avian species such as the Mary's Canary and the Wren.

Continuing our journey, we will arrive at El Chato Ranch, a private sanctuary where giant tortoises roam freely in their natural surroundings. Strolling along verdant paths, we will encounter these fascinating reptiles, which can reach lengths of up to a meter and a half (4 ft 11 in) and weigh more than 250 kg (551 lbs). Here, we will observe their eating habits and how they explore their vast habitat in search of shaded, humid spots. To recharge, we will enjoy a hearty country snack paired with a warm beverage.

Not far from there, we'll venture to the renowned lava tunnels of Santa Cruz Island. These tunnels, once channels for flowing molten lava, invite us to venture inside. As we navigate through these remarkable formations, we will journey back in time while exploring their intricate passageways and hidden alcoves.

After a fulfilling 3-hour immersion in the untouched nature of the Galápagos, we will return you to your hotel in Santa Cruz.
