Discover one of Ireland's most culturally rich cities on this walking tour of Galway. We'll explore iconic historic landmarks and neighborhoods while learning about the city's history.
Galway Walking Tour
We'll meet outside St Columba's Credit Union office on the edge of Eyre Square to begin the walking tour.
Starting at our meeting point, we'll walk around Eyre Square, where we'll see The Browne Doorway, originally the entrance to a family's home, moved to Eyre Square in 1905.
In the park, we'll also find the Quincentennial Fountain, designed by Eamon O'Doherty and inaugurated in 1984, commemorating the 500th anniversary of Galway City as a borough.
Next, we'll visit Lynch's Castle, a 16th-century structure currently serving as a bank. This Gothic building once belonged to a powerful family and served various functions over time.
We'll then pass by the Galway Market, operating year-round on Saturdays and Sundays, featuring food and craft stalls with traditional Irish products. Following this, our walk will take us down Kirwan's Lane, located in the Latin Quarter and showcasing 16th and 17th-century architecture.
As the tour concludes, we'll visit The Spanish Arch, built in 1584, originally known as "Ceann an Bhalla". You'll learn about the name change.
Finally, we'll cross Salmon Weir Bridge to Galway Cathedral, ending the tour after 1.5 hours. Slán!
