On this excursion to Almeida, Castelo Mendo and Castelo Rodrigo, we'll visit these three historical villages of Portugal and learn about their legends.
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at Praça Luís de Camões in Guarda and start a tour of Portugal's historic villages.
First, we'll go to Almeida, recognized for its fortifications. A guided tour of the old town will showcase attractions like the Gate of St. Francis, the Squadrons' Barracks, the Church of Mercy, and the Gate of St. Anthony.
Next, we will proceed to Castelo Mendo, an ancient town with a medieval appearance. We'll walk through its streets to see the old fortress and its notable features including the wall and a ruined church. We’ll also explore the new fortress of Castelo Mendo, known as the Arrabal de San Pedro, and learn about its damage from the 1755 earthquake.
Finally, we'll visit Castelo Rodrigo, a small village with a rich history shaped by territorial disputes. After exploring Castelo Rodrigo, we'll return to our starting point, completing the excursion in 4 hours.
