A 19th-century shipwreck still lies at the bottom of the sea on Havana's coast. Dive down and explore it with this snorkelling activity and learn about the history of the shipwreck.
Snorkelling in Havana
At the end of the 19th century, diplomatic tensions led to war between Spain, the United States, and Cuba. A pickup will occur at 9:30 am from the entrance of Havana's National Museum of Fine Arts in a classic 1950s American car.
After a 30-minute drive to the beaches located 10 kilometres east of Havana, participants will receive an introductory class along with physical warm-up exercises and safety information. Once ready, snorkelling gear will be provided. Two guides will accompany the group, equipped with buoyancy aids for safety.
Depending on sea conditions and group fitness levels, snorkellers will swim to either the City of Alexandria (300 metres from shore, a one hour round trip) or the SS Olivette (750 metres from shore, a one and a half hours round trip). Both shipwrecks are significant to Cuban history. Participants will be able to dive and observe these half-buried shipwrecks. The activity concludes with refreshing coconut water at the shore.
After changing out of wetsuits, the return to the starting point will be at 2 pm in the classic American car used for the trip.
