On this excursion to the deserted island of Spinalonga, we'll discover the story of the leprosy patients who sought refuge in this part of Crete.
Spinalonga Day Trip
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Heraklion Archeological Museum, and drive through the north of the island to Kritsa, one of Crete's oldest villages.
Here, we'll take a guided tour of the village and visit the 12th-century church of Panagia Kera, which features well-preserved Byzantine-era frescoes.
We will continue traveling, passing through the town of Elounda, until we reach the coastal village of Plaka. Upon arrival, we'll take a boat to the deserted island of Spinalonga, rich in history.
Once there, we'll tour the ruins of a fortress that welcomed leprosy patients seeking refuge. Your guide will share details about the treatments introduced by a special doctor who assisted the residents of Spinalonga.
After visiting Spinalonga, we'll return by boat to Plaka, where you'll have free time for a dip in the water and to enjoy lunch at a seaside restaurant. Afterward, we'll head to Agios Nikolaos to check out the Voulis salt lake and explore the city, which includes archaeological museums and Byzantine churches.
This tour concludes with a return to Heraklion, arriving back at the meeting point after approximately 9.5 hours. We will then take you back to your hotel in Heraklion, upon completion of the day trip, arriving about 8.5 hours after the start.
