On this excursion to the deserted island of Spinalonga, we'll discover the story of leprosy patients who sought refuge in this part of Crete.
Spinalonga Day Trip
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the Heraklion Archeological Museum and drive through the north of the island to Kritsa, one of Crete's oldest villages. Here, we'll take a guided tour of the village and visit the 12th-century church of Panagia Kera, known for its well-preserved Byzantine-era frescoes.
Continuing our journey, we will pass through Elounda until we reach the coastal village of Plaka, taking in several towns along the way. Upon arrival, we will take a boat to the deserted island of Spinalonga to tour the ruins of a fortress that welcomed leprosy patients from Crete and other parts of Greece. Your guide will provide insights about the treatments introduced by a special doctor.
After our visit to Spinalonga, we'll return by boat to Plaka, where you'll have free time to swim and have lunch at a seaside restaurant. Following this, we'll proceed to Agios Nikolaos to visit the Voulis salt lake and tour the city, which features archaeological museums and Byzantine churches.
This tour will conclude with our return to Heraklion, arriving back at the meeting point after approximately 9.5 hours. We will take you back to your hotel in Heraklion, approximately 8.5 hours after the start of the trip.
