3-Day Journey to Tantamayo
Day 1: Huanuco - Kotosh - Tantamayo
Nestled in the heart of the Andes, our journey begins at 9 am, when we will collect you from your accommodation in Huanuco. We will set off towards Tantamayo, covering a distance of six hours while stopping at the Kotosh archaeological site. Here, you will encounter the enigmatic temple of the Crossed Hands.
Our route will take us through the stunning Marañon River valley, leading us to the tranquil village of Tantamayo by the river's edge. After checking into your lodge, you'll have free time to wander through the local area and appreciate the stunning architecture of the 16th-century church.
Day 2: Discovering Tantamayo
After a hearty breakfast, we will proceed to explore the archaeological center of Tantamayo. A leisurely 35-minute walk will bring us to the initial sector, Piruro, where the impressive yarowilca structures stand at heights of 12 meters (40 feet). These magnificent edifices are affectionately dubbed the skyscrapers of the Andes.
Next, we will discover the Selmin Granero sector, which once served as a storage space for grains and food supplies. After a return bus ride to the lodge for lunch, we will set off again towards the archaeological site. Our hike, set at an elevation between 3400 and 3900 meters (11,150 - 12,800 feet), will take approximately 40 minutes as we ascend to the Susopillo sector, the pinnacle of our Tantamayo exploration.
At Susopillo, we will observe the ancient fortress alongside other significant constructions, including temples and colcas. Here, we will delve into the stories of the forgotten civilizations that inhabited Peru prior to the Inca Empire. The day concludes with a return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 3: Tantamayo - Corona del Inca - Huanuco
Our day starts early at 6 am with breakfast before we bid farewell to Tantamayo and begin our return journey to Huanuco. The landscape will unveil charming villages dotting the Huanuco highlands, including Chavin de Pariarca, Quivilla, Tingo Chico, and Ayapiteg. We'll also get a view of the hill known as Corona del Inca (Crown of the Inca). Its name holds intriguing significance that we will soon uncover!
Concluding our expedition, we will arrive back in Huanuco and ensure you are returned to your hotel by 1 pm.
