Spend the day exploring one of the main towns on the coast of Tarapacá on our day trip to Pisagua. You'll learn about the War of the Pacific, a major 19th-century conflict in South America.
Pisagua Day Trip
Between 8 and 9 am, pickup will be from your hotel in Iquique as we head northbound for Pisagua.
This coastal town, in the Chilean region of Tarapacá, was significant during the War of the Pacific from 1879 to 1884, involving Chile and a Peruvian-Bolivian alliance.
During our tour, we'll examine the history of the war, focusing on the Battle of San Francisco (or Dolores) during the Tarapacá campaign. We will visit the cemetery by the sea and see the wooden crosses left from this conflict.
Next, we will visit the monument commemorating the landing and combat of Pisagua on November 2, 1879. A walk around the town will reveal its background in the saltpetre industry and its 19th-century wooden buildings.
A pause at a local restaurant will allow you to enjoy some of the local gastronomy for lunch. We'll continue learning about Pisagua, which served as a detention center in the 20th century and now stands as a symbol of defense of human rights.
We will return you to your hotel in Iquique by 7 pm.
