Spend the day exploring one of the main towns on the coast of Tarapacá on our day trip to Pisagua. You'll learn about the War of the Pacific, a major conflict in 19th century South America.
Pisagua Day Trip
Between 8 and 9 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Iquique and set off northbound for the town of Pisagua.
This coastal town, located in the Chilean region of Tarapacá, was significant during the War of the Pacific (1879-1884), which saw Chile against a Peruvian-Bolivian alliance.
During our tour of the town, we'll explore the history of the war and the Battle of San Francisco (or Dolores) from the Tarapacá campaign. The visit includes a cemetery by the sea and its wooden crosses.
Next, we will visit the monument commemorating the landing and combat of Pisagua on 2 November 1879. We will then walk through the town to understand its background in the saltpetre industry, admiring the 19th-century wooden buildings.
A pause at a local restaurant will allow you to sample local gastronomy. After lunch, we will continue learning about Pisagua, which served as a detention centre in the 20th century and now represents the defence of human rights.
We'll return to your hotel in Iquique by 7 pm.
