Spend the day exploring one of the main towns on the coast of Tarapacá on our day trip to Pisagua. You'll learn about the War of the Pacific, a significant conflict in 19th-century South America.
Pisagua Day Trip
Between 8 and 9 am, we'll pick you up from your hotel in Iquique and head north to Pisagua.
This coastal town in the Chilean region of Tarapacá was a focal point in the War of the Pacific from 1879 to 1884, where Chile faced a Peruvian-Bolivian alliance.
During our tour, we'll discuss the history of the war, focusing on the Battle of San Francisco (or Dolores) during the Tarapacá campaign. We will visit the cemetery by the sea and view the wooden crosses left by the conflict.
Our itinerary includes the monument commemorating the landing and combat at Pisagua on 2 November 1879, followed by a walk through the town to explore its history in the saltpetre industry and admire 19th-century wooden buildings.
We will take a break for lunch at a local restaurant to experience local gastronomy. After lunch, we will continue to learn about Pisagua's history, noting its role as a detention centre in the 20th century, now a symbol of human rights.
We will return to your hotel in Iquique, arriving by 7 pm.
