The famous moai statues are the iconic symbols of Easter Island. On this trip to Ahu Akivi, we will visit some of the most important archaeological sites and discover just how important they are in Rapanui culture.

Ahu Akivi Trip

After collecting from your hotel on the island at the indicated time, we will travel to Ahu Akivi, one of the few moai sites located away from the coastline.

You will witness the seven moai of this sacred place, which face exactly at the sunset during the March equinox. The moai of Ahu Akivi are unique for their precise relation to an astronomical phenomenon.

As we tour this sanctuary, you will discover the significance of Ahu Akivi. Legend has it that the seven moai statues represent the seven explorers that discovered the island after a long journey from another island in Polynesia.

The tour will then take us to Panu Pau, a quarry situated on a small volcanic crater where the Rapanui mined sandstone. This rock was used to make the ‘pukao’ stone headdresses still seen on some of the moai. The ‘pukao’ represents a traditional hair bun worn by the Rapanui.

The last stop will be the Tahai Ceremonial Complex, where we will explore archaeological ruins that face the Pacific Ocean. We will return to your hotel three hours after pickup.
