Step into the ancient past of Easter Island with this day trip to the ceremonial village of Orongo and the Rano Kau volcano. Prepare to be astounded!

Orongo & Rano Kau Volcano Trip

At the indicated time, we'll collect you from your hotel and start a journey back to ancient times. The first stop is at Vinapu, an archaeological site that contains some enchanting stones carved with decoration of painstaking detail, and magnificent Ahu stone platforms which resemble the famous Inca constructions in Cuzco.

Next, we'll head to the majestic Rano Kau volcano. We'll walk along the sides of the volcano, which has been eroded by centuries of wind and rain. We'll eventually reach the top and the huge crater, which houses one of the three freshwater lakes of Easter Island. From here, you'll enjoy the views of the spectacular landscape and the three islets where the Rapa Nui people swam to every year to perform an important religious ceremony.

Close to the Rano Kau volcano, you'll encounter the ruins of the ceremonial town of Orongo. Here, you'll see mystical oval-shaped stone statues looking out over the ocean where the followers of the Makemake god dwelled. During our visit to the archaeological site, you'll see the numerous petroglyphs of the feats of the “birdmen”, the winners of an annual race which involved swimming to the islets and retrieving the first egg of the season.

By the end of the tour, you'll have discovered the legends and traditions of the ancient inhabitants of Easter Island. Finally, we'll end the excursion 3 hours after pickup back at the hotel.

Itinerary Changes

Please note that the archaeological site of Orongo is closed until further notice due to construction. During this time, we'll replace this stop with a visit to Caleta Hango Pike, which means Hidden Bay. This sector is associated with a ceremonial complex built by the platforms of Ahu Ataranga, Ahu Ana Hoto Huero, and Ahu Riata. This site was very important in the 19th century, since the sheep farming company Williamson Balfour signed a lease agreement for the island with the Chilean government, turning this bay into a port to facilitate the transport of goods to and from the mainland.

Entrance to Rapa Nui National Park

You'll have to buy the entrance ticket to the Rapa Nui National Park in advance, as this ticket is not included in the price.
