Miguel Hernández Tour

"Andaluces de Jaén, /aceituneros altivos, /decideme en el alma: ¿quién, /quién levantó los olivos?" These verses by Miguel Hernández, part of the provincial anthem of Jaén, were written in 1937. After marrying Josefina Manresa, he left for the Jaén front lines. This guided tour begins at the central Plaza de San Ildefonso, focusing on the writer's legacy during his time in the city.

During the tour of the historic center of Jaén, we will explore Miguel Hernández's ties to the city, where he served as Commissioner of Culture and directed the newspaper Altavoz del Frente Sur. This was also the time he wrote the poem Aceituneros, which will be discussed along with his other works compiled in Vientos del pueblo.

The tour concludes at the air raid shelter in Plaza de Santiago, a location that notably impressed Miguel Hernández during the war. Here, the local population sought refuge during the 1937 bombings. Visitors will encounter portraits, poems, and journalistic accounts reflecting Hernández's experiences, including his commentary on the bombings and their impact on the local community.
