The Jewish Shabbat introduced the world to the concept of the weekend. Join this walking tour to explore the origins, history, and significance of this holy day in Jerusalem's historic centre.
Shabbat Experience Walking Tour
We will meet at the Jaffa Gate to learn about the meaning of Shabbat for Jews, which begins at sunset on Friday and concludes at sunset on Saturday. Key practices include Torah reading, rest, and prayer.
The tour includes exploring the Jewish quarter with visits to the Four Sephardic Synagogues: Eliahu Ha-Nav, Yochanan Ben-Zakai, Istanbul, and Kahal Tsion. Each synagogue's decor will be discussed in detail.
Next, we will walk through the Old City of Jerusalem to the Hurva synagogue, built by Sephardic Jews from Spain and Europe, where we will learn about the aftermath of the destructive fire instigated by Arabs.
This Shabbat tour will include a visit to the Western Wall, significant for its connection to the Jewish lament over the destruction of their holy area. Participants will have the chance to insert a wish into the wall.
Finally, we will return to the starting point to conclude the activity approximately two hours after departure.
