Greeks, Romans... the cultural legacy of Alexandria can be seen in its monuments and archaeological sites. Immerse yourself in the past with this excursion from Cairo.
Day Trip Details
At 6:30 AM, we leave from Cairo towards Alexandria, the most important Mediterranean city in Egypt.
The tour begins at the Alexandria port with a visit to the Qaitibay Citadel, a defensive complex constructed in the 15th century by Sultan Qaitibay, where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood.
Next, we head south to the Kom el Shoqafa Catacombs, showcasing the fusion of Egyptian and Greco-Roman culture with its three distinct levels, passages, tunnels, and galleries. Near the catacombs is Pompey's Pillar, formerly the site of a temple dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian God Serapis.
We will have lunch in central Alexandria, featuring a menu of fish and seafood rice. In the evening, we'll visit The New Alexandria Library, which honors the ancient library from the 3rd century BC, destroyed possibly during the Roman Civil War. This contemporary library, reopened in 2002, is now a significant cultural space in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Finally, we will return to the hotels in Cairo after 12 hours.
The New Alexandria Library
Note that the New Alexandria Library is closed on Fridays and only open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM. Tours on these days will include a visit to the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque and Ledge instead.
The official guided visit is in English, French, and Arabic.
Children under 12 cannot visit the library but can go to the Children's Museum.
