Greeks, Romans... the cultural legacy of Alexandria can be seen in every one of its monuments and archaeological sites. Immerse yourself in the past with this excursion from Cairo.
Excursion to Alexandria
At 6:30 in the morning, we'll depart from Cairo towards Alexandria, the most important Mediterranean city in Egypt.
We'll start our tour at the Alexandria port by visiting the Qaitibay Citadel, a defensive complex built in the 15th century by Sultan Qaitibay, on the site where the famous Lighthouse of Alexandria once stood. The lighthouse was destroyed by earthquakes, and its remains were used in the construction of the citadel.
Next, we head south to the Kom el Shoqafa Catacombs, where the relief artwork reflects the fusion of Egyptian and Greco-Roman culture. We will explore its three levels featuring passages, tunnels, and galleries that distribute the tombs of the necropolis. Nearby is Pompey's Pillar, at the former site of the temple dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian God Serapis.
We will enjoy lunch in central Alexandria, including fish and seafood rice. In the evening, we will visit The New Alexandria Library, established as a tribute to the ancient library from the 3rd century BC. The library, reopened in 2002, is a crucial cultural space in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Finally, we will return to our hotels in Cairo after approximately 12 hours.
The New Alexandria Library
Please note that the New Alexandria Library is closed on Fridays and Saturdays. On these days, we will visit the Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque and Ledge instead.
The official guided visit to the New Alexandria Library is available in English, French, and Arabic.
Children under 12 cannot visit the New Alexandria Library, but they can visit the Children's Museum.
