The Coptic neighborhood of Cairo, the Christian part of the Egyptian capital, offers a significant historic and monumental heritage. Discover it with this guided tour.
Description
We will pick you up at your hotel and proceed to Cairo's Coptic neighborhood, where we will explore the history of Christianity in Egypt and the distinctions between Coptic Catholics and Coptic Orthodox Christians. Both religious groups have their own temples, which we will visit.
First, we will visit the church of Saint Maria the Virgin, commonly known as The Hanging Church of Cairo, built above the old gates of the Babylon fortress. Inside, we will see various works of art and mosaics from different historical periods.
Next, we will explore the Church of St. George, the Orthodox church, and the church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, where legend states the holy family took refuge during their escape from King Herod.
To deepen our understanding of the Coptic tradition in Cairo, we will visit the Cairo Coptic Museum, which houses a wide range of sacred and decorative objects. Notable among these are the Nag Hammadi Manuscripts, known as the "Gospel of Judas," which have sparked significant theological debates over the years.
After the museum visit, we will enjoy lunch at a traditional restaurant in the Coptic neighborhood, featuring a menu of various specialties, including a main dish of meat and rice. We will conclude our tour with a return to the hotel.
