This free tour of the Little Mermaid and the Port of Copenhagen is an opportunity to learn about the Danish capital's maritime history and its most famous statue.
Description
We will meet at the Generator Copenhagen Hostel to begin this free tour of Copenhagen. The tour will cover the Port of Copenhagen, a historical site for economic and cultural exchange. We will explore the monuments in this area and learn about their origins.
On our way to the coastal area, we will pass through the King's Gardens and see the exterior of Rosenborg Castle and Nyboder, a district known for its striking orange buildings built in the 17th century for the Danish Navy. Here, we'll discuss the relationship between the growth of the merchant port and the increase in navy personnel.
We will then arrive at Kastellet, one of Northern Europe's oldest forts. After walking through this citadel, we will reach the sculpture of the Little Mermaid, an iconic monument inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale. This area also offers a view of the Port of Copenhagen, the largest harbour in Denmark and a significant Baltic Sea port, where we will share interesting facts.
Walking along the harbour, we will see the Copenhagen Opera House, the Nyholm Central Guardhouse, and Ofelia Plads. The tour will conclude after 2.5 hours at the Nyhavn Canal in the heart of Copenhagen.
