Discover a hidden side of Hong Kong on this tour of Mong Kok. This guided tour provides an intimate look at the real estate crisis and inequality in one of the world's wealthiest cities.

The Dark Side of Hong Kong: Mong Kok

We will meet at Prince Edward Station to explore the challenges of housing in Hong Kong. The city has one of the most expensive and least affordable real estate markets. A family of three can live in an apartment as small as 10 square meters (107 sq ft).

During the tour, we'll visit Portland Street, observing the contrast between traditional 4-story buildings and modern 30-story skyscrapers, reflecting urbanization in Hong Kong.

Next, we’ll explore a subdivided housing unit on Cedar Street, gaining first-hand experience of living in tiny spaces. We'll learn about the conditions that lead families to endure living in cage houses.

We will proceed to Lui Seng Chun, a historic building where we’ll enjoy herbal tea while hearing stories from locals affected by the real estate crisis. These accounts highlight the struggle for decent housing in an unequal city.

Continuing our walking tour along Lai Chi Kok Road and Boundary Street, we will uncover examples of subdivided housing often hidden in plain sight and discuss gentrification's impact on impoverished neighborhoods.

Finally, we will arrive at Hai Tan Street to examine how land sales affect the low income tax in Hong Kong amidst increasing social inequality. The tour concludes at Sham Shui Po Station, lasting 2 to 2.5 hours, providing insight into the harsh realities faced by residents.
