While you're in New Zealand, don't miss out on a day trip to Mt. Cook, the island's tallest peak, leaving from Tekapo. Visit the tallest peak in New Zealand during your stay.
Mt Cook Day Trip from Tekapo
After gathering at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Tekapo, we'll depart for Mt. Cook, the highest peak in New Zealand.
We'll arrive at Lake Pukaki to appreciate its waters, which change color based on the weather. If conditions are clear, we may see Mt. Cook from this vantage point.
Next, we'll travel to Mt. Cook National Park, known as Aoraki, where you can explore the area at your own pace. Options include the Hooker Valley or the Tasman Glacier.
If you choose Hooker Valley, you can hike along ice-covered cliff faces leading to an ice-filled lake at the base of Mt. Cook. You may also hear the glacier moving.
Alternatively, the Tasman Glacier track offers views of the glacier, river, and lake, taking you through the glacier's old terminal moraines.
Lunch will be provided by Fairlie Bakehouse, allowing you to enjoy local Kiwi cuisine while taking in the park's views. You'll have time to relax at the Mt. Cook Information Center to learn about the park's history.
Finally, we'll return to Tekapo, arriving at the meeting point 5 hours later.
