Discover two beautiful towns in the spectacular countryside of southern Italy when you take our fantastic day trip. In Grottaglie you will encounter magical caves and traditional ceramic artworks, and in Matera, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time as you stroll along the picturesque streets. This is an experience that takes you to the heart of traditional Italian culture!

Grottaglie and Matera Trip

We will pick you up from your hotel before heading to the region of Murgia. Our 50-minute journey takes us through idyllic countryside and stone houses, arriving at Grottaglie in the province of Taranto.

In Grottaglie, you will find a captivating city surrounded by prehistoric caves. We will stroll through the streets filled with artisan shops selling traditional ceramics. You can visit the Museum of Ceramics to learn more about this craft tradition before continuing through the historic center.

Next, we travel to Matera, with origins dating back to the Stone Age. We explore the 'City of Stones', which features a labyrinth of narrow streets, houses, and balconies. Be sure to visit Civita, Sasso Barisano, and Sasso Caveoso before departing!

In Matera, named European Capital of Culture 2019, you will visit the 'Sassi', an area of prehistoric cave houses. Exploring the narrow alleyways here will reveal why this town was chosen as the setting for Mel Gibson's film The Passion of Christ.

The trip concludes back in Lecce, where we accompany you back to your accommodation.
