Grottaglie and Matera Trip

We will pick you up from your hotel before heading to the region of Murgia. Our 50-minute journey takes us through idyllic countryside and stone houses, arriving at Grottaglie in the province of Taranto.

Grottaglie features a captivating city surrounded by prehistoric caves. You will stroll through the picturesque streets filled with artisan shops selling colorful traditional ceramics. You can visit the Museum of Ceramics for more on this craft tradition before continuing through the historic center.

Next, we travel to the town of Matera, with origins dating back to the Stone Age. You will explore the 'City of Stones', a labyrinth of narrow streets and houses. Additionally, visit the neighborhoods of Civita, Sasso Barisano, and Sasso Caveoso during your time here.

In Matera, also known as the European Capital of Culture 2019, you will see the 'Sassi', an area of prehistoric cave houses carved from the cliffs. Walking through the narrow alleys, you will understand why this town was chosen as the setting for Mel Gibson's film The Passion of Christ.

The trip concludes with a return to Lecce, where we will accompany you back to your accommodation.
