On this guided tour of the Loulé salt mine, you'll learn about one of the oldest trades in the Algarve and see an art exhibition dedicated to Santa Barbara, the Patron Saint of Miners.

When booking, you can choose between the following options:

Salt Mine Tour

We'll meet at the entrance of the Loulé salt mine and start a guided tour inside. An elevator will take us down 754.5 ft (230 meters) deep. We will step out onto the saline floor and follow a circular path through the mine's galleries, observing the walls formed by salt rocks of various colors, created more than 230 million years ago.

During the visit, we will learn about the salt extraction process and the evolution of the engineering and mining machinery used for this work. The tour lasts for 1.5 hours before returning outside.

Salt Mine Tour + Art Exhibition

This option includes a guided tour of the Loulé salt mine and an exhibition of Santa Barbara, the Patron Saint of Miners and Other Arts, located in one of the galleries. You can see sculptures, paintings, and religious pieces related to her worshippers and learn about the techniques used to create these works of art.
