Pico Island Tour
Our adventure begins at the pier of Pico Island, where we will gather at the scheduled time. From this point, we embark on an exploration of the island, making our way through the scenic capital, Madalena.
As we venture beyond the city limits, we'll uncover the island's significant vinicultural heritage, traversing the UNESCO-designated wine-growing regions that adorn Pico.
The journey continues along the coastline, leading us to the serene Pocinho pond, a sanctuary for various migratory bird species. This thriving vineyard landscape lies under the watchful gaze of the volcano, which shares the island's name. The majestic peak, part of the Montaña do Pico Nature Reserve, stands as the highest point in both the Azores and Portugal, towering at 2351 meters above sea level!
Next, we will stop at a local eatery celebrated for its superb fresh fish and regional meat dishes.
In the afternoon, our visit to the Whalers' Museum awaits. Here, you'll find an array of model vessels and artifacts that highlight the historical significance of whaling on Pico Island.
As we head back toward the northern coast, marvel at views of the island of São Jorge. For those interested, there will be an opportunity for a refreshing swim. Following this, we'll make our way to the Lajido village to enjoy a tasting of the renowned Verdelho wine, concluding our journey in Madalena after approximately 8.5 hours.
