Located opposite the port of Marseille, Château d'If was a notorious jail in France, making it an essential visit in the South of France.
Why Visit the Château d'If?
Château d'If is linked to Alexandre Dumas' novel, The Count of Monte Cristo. It includes old cells from an important prison built from 1524 to 1531 on the orders of King Francis I for strategic defense. Visitors can enjoy incredible coastal views from its towers and turrets, including the nearby Frioul archipelago islands. The prison housed various notable inmates throughout history, including Protestants, the captain of the ship that brought the Great Plague in 1720, and revolutionary militants. An informational leaflet in English is provided to enhance the visit.
