Why Visit the Château d'If?
Part of Alexandre Dumas' novel, The Count of Monte Cristo, resides in the stronghold of Château d'If. Here, you can explore old cells of a vital state prison in southern France, originally constructed between 1524 and 1531 by King Francis I for coastal defense. The castle offers coastal views from its towers, with visibility extending to the nearby Frioul archipelago islands.
