Your ticket grants access to the ancient cells of this significant state prison in southern France. Originally, however, the structure served a different purpose. Constructed between 1524 and 1531 under the direction of King Francis I, it was recognized as a crucial defensive point against maritime assaults.

Thanks to its advantageous position, you will enjoy remarkable coastal panoramas from the towers and battlements. From the peak, the nearby Frioul archipelago comes into view, offering a feast for the eyes.

This site is steeped in inspiration, having influenced Dumas, and it has accumulated a wealth of legends throughout its history. The prison housed diverse individuals, including early 18th-century Protestants, the captain responsible for introducing the Great Plague to the city in 1720, Count Mirabeau in 1774, revolutionary figures from 1848 and 1870, and German detainees in 1914, among others. Essential Information

Due to its small island location, the site’s visiting hours are contingent on weather conditions.

If conditions are adverse, such as severe weather or strong Mistral winds, the castle will close for safety. Access entirely relies on the changing sea and wind situations, which may lead to temporary ferry service interruptions.

The operational schedule for Château d'If is as follows:

April 1 to September 30: open daily from 10:30 am to 6 pmOctober 1 to March 31: open daily from 10:30 am to 5:15 pmDecember 24 and 31: closing time at 4 pm

The last entry will always be influenced by the boat schedules from the port.

Free Admission Policy

Entry is complimentary for children under 18 and EU residents aged 18 to 25 (upon presenting valid identification at the ticket office). Additionally, everyone can enter for free on the first Sunday of each month from January to March and from November to December, as well as on the third weekend of September.

Transportation Exclusions

The admission fee does not include transportation to the site. Visitors must independently take the ferries operating from Marseille's Vieux Port to the island of If. Keep in mind that if the ferry service is halted due to weather issues, accessing the castle will not be possible.
