Altamura & Gravina Day Trip

At 9:30 am, we'll meet in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and hop aboard a bus for our day trip to Altamura and Gravina.

Altamura, also known as The Apulian Lioness, is famed for its heritage and its PDO bread. Upon arrival, we'll tour starting from Porto Bari, an entrance to the old town.

We will walk to the Cathedral, dating back to the 13th century, and observe its sculpted portal and the clock tower, a Gothic element added in 1858.

The tour will continue through the Cloisters, authentic symbols of the city, retaining their original layout. We’ll visit the Giudecca Cloister, Tradimento Cloister, and Mori Cloister.

Next, we'll enter the National Archaeological Museum of Altamura to see the famous Altamura Man, a skeleton of Homo neanderthalensis. Before the museum, we'll taste some PDO bread baked in a wood-fired oven.

You’ll then have some free time for lunch before we head to Gravina. This town, built on a ravine of almost 330 feet (100 meters), features the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Crypt of St. Michael, and the beautiful bridge of the Madonna della Stella.

We’ll return to Matera and drop you off at your hotel around 5 pm.
