Get ready to be amazed by the historic center of Matera on this guided walking tour. You'll see the famous churches and rural houses of this city in Basilicata.
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at Via Alessandro Volta to begin our guided walking tour of Matera, a city inhabited since the Paleolithic times.
We'll first stop in front of the Church of San Francesco, admiring its Baroque-style exterior while learning about the role of churches in the history and daily life of the Sassi.
Next, we'll reach the Piazza del Sedile and then descend to Sassi di Matera, one of the oldest areas in the city. This area, once considered a symbol of poverty, is now a World Heritage Site.
The tour continues through the winding streets with scenic views. We'll visit the rural church of San Antonio, a sacred space carved from stone.
You will then be welcomed into a traditional Sassi house, observing how generations adapted to extreme weather without electricity and water.
Afterward, we’ll head to Via Madonna delle Virtù, where the historic Sassi of Barisano and Caveoso meet. Finally, we’ll reach Porta Pistoia and the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, located on a cliff's edge. The tour concludes after 2 hours at this last spot.
