Get ready to be amazed by the historic center of Matera on this guided walking tour. You'll see the famous churches and rural houses of this city in Basilicata.
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at Via Alessandro Volta. From here, we'll begin our guided walking tour of Matera, exploring a city inhabited since the Paleolithic times.
We’ll first stop in front of the Church of San Francesco, admiring its Baroque-style exterior while learning about the churches' role in the history of the Sassi.
Next, we'll reach the Piazza del Sedile and descend to the Sassi di Matera, surrounded by stone houses and hand-carved streets. This area, once a symbol of poverty, is now a World Heritage Site.
We'll continue through the winding streets, enjoying scenic views, and visit the rural church of San Antonio, a sacred space carved from stone.
Later, we'll visit a traditional Sassi house, witnessing how generations adapted to extreme weather without electricity or water.
We’ll then head to Via Madonna delle Virtù where Barisano and Caveoso meet, ending at Porta Pistoia, sharing anecdotes about Matera. Finally, we will reach the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, located on the edge of a cliff.
This tour lasts 2 hours.
