Get ready to be amazed by the historic center of Matera on this guided walking tour. You'll see the famous churches and rural houses of this city in Basilicata.

Tour Details

At the designated time, we'll meet at Via Alessandro Volta. From here, we'll begin our guided walking tour of Matera, a city inhabited since the Paleolithic times.

Following Via San Francesco, we’ll first stop in front of the Church of San Francesco. We’ll admire its Baroque-style exterior while learning about the role of the churches in the history and daily life of the Sassi.

Then, we'll reach the Piazza del Sedile and descend to Sassi di Matera, one of the city’s oldest areas. This World Heritage Site, once considered a symbol of poverty, features stone houses and hand-carved streets.

The tour will continue through the winding streets, visiting the rural church of San Antonio, a space carved from stone with fascinating details.

Next, we’ll visit a traditional Sassi house, showcasing how generations adapted to extreme weather without electricity and water.

We'll head to Via Madonna delle Virtù, where the historic Sassi of Barisano and Caveoso meet, before reaching Porta Pistoia to discuss Matera's extensive history. Finally, we’ll visit the Church of San Pietro Caveoso, located on a cliff's edge, before concluding after 2 hours.
