You'll meet your guide at the selected time in the Piazza Vittorio Veneto, dating back to 1880, to begin your guided walking tour of Matera. The tour lasts two hours and will cover the historic centre of this southern Italian city.

Enjoy panoramic views of the Sassi, the UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its rock-carved homes inhabited since prehistoric times, among Italy's first settlements.

As you walk through Matera's main streets, you will recognize the historic golden-stone architecture, often compared to Jerusalem and featured in films like Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ and recently in Wonder Woman.

During the tour, you will pass the Matera Cathedral, a 13th-century Apulian Romanesque structure located at the highest point of the city. You will also have the opportunity to visit some Sassi, learning about the origins of the cave dwellings.

The final stop will be at one of Matera's four Rupestrian, or cave, churches: the Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate, where you can view the ancient cave paintings on the rock-hewn walls and ceiling.
