Discover the ancient cave dwellings and rock churches of Matera, the European Capital of Culture for 2019, on this fascinating guided tour of one of the oldest continually inhabited settlements in the world.
Matera Private Tour
Meet your guide at the time you selected in the Piazza Vittorio Veneto, established in 1880, to begin your guided walking tour of Matera. The tour lasts two hours, exploring the historic centre of this southern Italian city.
You will enjoy panoramic views of the Sassi, cave dwellings that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inhabited since prehistoric times and among the first human settlements in Italy.
As the tour progresses through Matera's main streets, you will see the golden-stone architecture, often compared to Jerusalem and used as a filming location in various movies, including Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ and Wonder Woman.
We will pass the Matera Cathedral, a notable example of 13th-century Apulian Romanesque architecture, located at the highest point of the city. You'll have the opportunity to visit some of the Sassi to learn about the origins of these cave dwellings.
The final stop will be at one of Matera's four Rupestrian churches: the Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate, where you will find ancient cave paintings on the rock-hewn walls and ceiling.
