The tour meets at 10 am in the central Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where we begin our walking tour of the main points in this city, recognized as the 2019 European Capital of Culture.
The first stop will be the Piazza dei Sedile, featuring a palace that symbolizes the cultural life of Matera. We will then proceed to Via Duomo, where the ancient entries to the city, Porta di Juso and Porta di Suso, are located.
The next highlight is the Matera cathedral, showcasing a Romanesque architectural style. You will learn to identify its characteristics. Nearby, visit the Casa Grotta de Matera to gain insight into daily life in the "Sassi," which are protected as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The influence of the Sassi also appears in places of worship, such as the Church of Santa Maria de Idris, where you will see a remarkable example of this technique. The tour concludes at 12:30.
