Sassi de Matera Guided Tour
We will meet at Piazza Pascoli to begin our journey into Matera's past, starting with an introduction to its history and architecture.
Next, we will proceed to Civita, the highest point of the Sassi of Matera. Along the way, we will observe significant monuments, including the baroque churches of Purgatorio and San Francesco d'Assisi.
We will walk through Via delle Beccherie, previously a shopping street, and reach Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where we'll see a 19th-century fountain by King Ferdinand II and enjoy a panoramic view of the Sasso Barisano.
In Sasso Barisano, we will visit an underground space known as a 'hypogeum' and a cave house to understand the life of peasants until the 1950s. We will then explore a handicraft workshop featuring pieces made of tuff.
Afterward, we will walk to Sasso Caveoso to visit a rock-hewn cave church from the Italo-Greek period, showcasing icons from the 10th to 13th centuries.
Before concluding the tour, we will enjoy a tasting of typical products of Matera, which will vary with the seasons.
The tour will last three hours from the starting time.
