Sassi de Matera Guided Tour
We will meet at the specified time in Piazza Pascoli, where an introduction will provide insight into Matera's history and architectural features.
Next, we head to the Civita, the highest point of the Sassi. During the walk, notable monuments include the baroque churches of Purgatorio and San Francesco d'Assisi.
We will pass through Via delle Beccherie, formerly a shopping street, and arrive at Piazza Vittorio Veneto, where the 19th-century fountain built by King Ferdinand II is located, offering a panoramic view of the Sasso Barisano.
In Sasso Barisano, we will visit an underground space, known as a 'hypogeum', and a cave house to explore the living conditions of peasants until the 1950s. Following this, a visit to a handicraft workshop showcasing pieces made of tuff will occur.
We will then proceed to the Sasso Caveoso, where one of its rock-hewn cave churches from the Italo-Greek period contains icons from between the 10th and 13th centuries.
The tour will conclude with a tasting of typical products of Matera, which will vary by season, three hours after the start.
