Discover one of the most beautiful villages in Basilicata on our Melfi Private Tour. You'll be accompanied by an expert guide as you explore the rooms of the Norman Swabian castle and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
Melfi Private Tour
At your chosen time, we'll meet at the entrance to the Castle of Melfi. Your guide will be waiting for you outside this notable fortress, one of the largest in southern Italy. Let's start exploring!
Surrounded by ten towers, the Castle of Melfi stands atop a once volcanic hill overlooking the town. Its history dates back to the 11th century, being built by Roberto il Guiscardo and later expanded by Frederick II of Swabia who used it as a summer residence. The castle hosted six papal councils, including one by antipope Anacletus II.
On the ground floor, you'll visit the National Archaeological Museum of Melfi, where you can view artefacts from the Vulture area, including Daunian ceramics and bronze vases from the Greeks and Etruscans. The Clock Tower houses the Sarcophagus of Rapolla, a Roman sarcophagus dating back to the second century AD.
The tour continues with a visit to the historic centre of Melfi and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Built in 1055 by Roger Guiscard, it retains only the bell tower from 1153. Inside, you can observe the 18th-century coffered ceiling, pulpit, throne, and organ in late Baroque style.
After exploring the main sights and the cathedral, we'll conclude our private tour of Melfi.
