Discover the history of Messina, a Sicilian city marked by earthquakes and invasions, yet preserving its architecture. The tour includes visits to Roman remains and other historical sites.
Guided Tour of Messina
The tour meets near the Messina port, beginning a guided exploration of the city's history. We will highlight the impact of natural disasters and invasions on the city. At the port, we will view the monument of the Virgin Mary that welcomes visitors.
Next, we will visit the Church of the Santissima Annunziata dei Catalani, showcasing influences from Arab, Roman, and Byzantine architecture built over the ruins of a temple to Neptune.
As Messina is famous for its cannoli, there will be a tasting at a local bakery.
Then, we arrive at the Piazza del Duomo to see the 12th-century cathedral and its notable ornamental clock tower, a highlight of Messina.
To conclude the walking tour, we will visit the Puppet Theatre Museum of the Gargano family, recognized on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
