Hiking to Serracozzo Cave

On this hiking route to Serracozzo Cave, we'll explore the interior of Mount Etna by walking through its narrow volcanic tunnel.

Description

We will meet at the car park of the Citelli Refuge at the scheduled time and start a trek to Serracozzo Cave, recognized as the most significant cave of Etna. The hike begins at 1740 metres (5708 feet) and ascends to 2160 metres (7086 feet) above sea level, leading us to the entrance of the cave. The journey will take us through birch forests and past remains of volcanic rock.

Upon reaching the edge of the Bove Valley, we will encounter Serra delle Concazze, an 8-kilometre-long (4.9-mile) depression. Here, we will pause to rest and enjoy snacks you have brought.

After the break, we will enter Serracozzo Cave through its volcanic tunnel. Established in 1971, this elongated lava canyon features a remarkable sheet of light entering through a small hole in the ceiling.

After exploring the cave, we will return to the meeting point after 4 hours of hiking.
