On this hiking route to Serracozzo Cave, we'll explore the interior of Mount Etna by walking through its narrow volcanic tunnel.
Description
At the indicated time, we'll meet at the car park of the Citelli Refuge and start a trekking route to the Serracozzo Cave. We will begin walking up Etna from 1740 metres (5708 feet) until we reach 2160 metres (7086 feet), where the entrance to Serracozzo Cave is located. Along the way, we will traverse the birch forests and view the remains of volcanic rock.
Upon reaching the edge of the Bove Valley, we will see the large Serra delle Concazze, an 8-kilometre-long (4.9-mile) depression on Etna's eastern side. A stop will be made to rest and eat your packed food.
Afterwards, we'll enter Serracozzo Cave through its volcanic tunnel. This cave, formed in 1971, features an elongated lava canyon with a sheet of light that enters through a small hole in the ceiling.
After exploring the cave, we will return to the meeting point after 4 hours of hiking.
