Treme Neighbourhood Tour
At the scheduled time, we will meet at 718 N Rampart St, beginning our guided tour of Treme, known as New Orleans' African American neighborhood.
We will start by exploring Congo Square and Louis Armstrong Park, diving into the history of this ancient neighborhood where, in the 18th century, the African-American population enjoyed rights as free individuals. The tour will reveal the reasons behind this and provide various interesting facts.
During the tour, we will visit significant historical sites such as St. Augustine's Church, the first black Catholic church in the United States. We will discuss how freedom was curtailed after the Civil War and learn about the history of the Ku Klux Klan's actions in the area.
We will walk through the neighborhood's distinctive architecture, including "Creole" houses, while exploring the history of jazz, which originated in Treme. After approximately 2 hours of learning about New Orleans and its Afro-American culture, the tour will conclude in Louis Armstrong Park.
