Treme Neighbourhood Tour
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at 718 N Rampart St to start our guided tour of Treme, known as New Orleans' African American neighborhood.
We'll begin by exploring Congo Square and Louis Armstrong Park, delving into the spirit of the oldest African American neighborhood in the US. In the 18th century, residents enjoyed certain freedoms not accessible to many African Americans. The tour includes significant facts about this history.
Throughout the tour, we'll visit important sites such as St. Augustine's Church, the first black Catholic church in the US. We'll discuss how freedom in this neighborhood diminished after the Civil War and learn about the history of the Ku Klux Klan in the area.
We'll walk through streets lined with characteristic architecture and discover "Creole" houses. Additionally, we'll discuss the history of jazz and its origins in the Treme district.
After approximately 2 hours of learning about the origins of New Orleans and its Afro-American culture, we will conclude the tour in Louis Armstrong Park.
