At the scheduled time, we'll meet at 718 N Rampart St for our guided tour of Treme, recognized as New Orleans' African American neighborhood.
We will start by exploring Congo Square and Louis Armstrong Park, uncovering the spirit of the oldest African American neighborhood in the US. During the 18th century, residents here enjoyed the title of free person, a significant aspect of the area's history. We will reveal the reasons behind this and share numerous historical insights.
The tour will also include visits to key sites such as St. Augustine's Church, the first black Catholic church in the United States. We will discuss how the neighborhood's freedom was impacted post-Civil War, including the history of the Ku Klux Klan's influence in the area.
We will stroll through picturesque streets featuring the district's characteristic architecture and learn about Creole houses. Additionally, the origins of jazz music will be covered. Did you know that its roots can be traced back to the Treme district?
After approximately 2 hours of exploring the origins of New Orleans and its Afro-American culture, we will conclude the tour in Louis Armstrong Park.
