High cliffs on an idyllic beach, a castle built by the Knights Templar, and an exiled Pope. Get to know all the charms of Peñíscola and discover its history with this excursion.
Peñiscola Day Trip
We'll meet at 9:15 am next to the Oropesa del Mar Tourist Office, where a minibus will take us to Peñíscola.
After a 40-minute journey, we'll arrive at this town on the Costa del Azahar. During the guided tour, we'll walk around its famous monuments and discover the influences of Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines and Arabs. From the old artillery park, we'll see Peñíscola's northern beach and Pope Luna's castle. After photos of its façade, we'll enter the fortress.
We’ll discuss the exile of a bishop who broke with papal authority, related to the Western Schism. The route will include exteriors of other emblematic buildings like the Casa de las Conchas and the Church of Santa Maria from the 13th century.
We'll also visit the Bufador, a hole between rocks and the sea that produces a howling sound, believed to have scared away assailants over the years.
The last stop will be at the Museum of the Sea. Exhibits include photographs, drawings, and fishing equipment that showcase this Castilian town's seafaring tradition.
After the museum visit, we'll return by minibus, ending the tour at 1:45 pm back in Oropesa del Mar.
