Why Experience the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg?
Arriving at the designated time, you will enter the Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg and immerse yourself in its 900 years of rich history. Standing proudly atop the Vosges Mountains, the impressive outline of this medieval fortress is bound to inspire wonder.
Constructed by the Hohenstaufen lineage in the 12th century, the fortress has witnessed centuries of strife, shifting ownership among prominent rulers, including the Habsburgs during the 15th century. Each era has contributed to the current form of the castle, adding unique elements to its complex history.
After enduring years of neglect following its devastation in the Thirty Years' War, the fortification underwent a remarkable restoration in 1900 by Wilhelm II of Germany. His vision of breathing life back into the Middle Ages led him to engage Bodo Ebhardt, a specialist in medieval structures. Today, this castle serves not only as a historical site but also as an educational resource, attracting over half a million visitors annually.
Your entrance ticket grants you access to a self-guided exploration of this captivating fortress. You can wander the lower courtyard, visit the castle's inn, forge, and mill, ascend the spiral staircases to view the lord’s furnished chambers, traverse ancient drawbridges, and meander through halls rich with history. Your visit will deepen your appreciation for the castle's significance as a formidable mountain fortress.
