Built by the Hohenstaufen family in the 12th century, it has undergone many transformations over the centuries through various owners, including the Habsburgs in the 15th century. After its destruction in the Thirty Years' War and subsequent abandonment, the Château was restored in 1900 by Wilhelm II of Germany, under the expertise of Bodo Ebhardt. Today, it serves as both a historical monument and an educational site, attracting over half a million visitors annually. Your ticket grants you access to a self-guided tour where you can explore the lower courtyard, castle's inn, forge, mill, furnished chambers, and ancient drawbridges, enhancing your understanding of the castle's historical significance.
Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg Opening Hours
The Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg is open at the following times:
January, February and March: from 9:30 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 5 pmApril, May, June, September, October, November, and December: from 9:30 am to 6 pmJuly and August: from 9 am to 7 pm
Final admission is 1 hour before the castle closes. Note that the castle is closed on January 1st and December 25th and 26th.
Free Admission
On the first Sunday of each month from November to March, and during European Heritage Days, admission is free for all visitors.
