Gion Complimentary Walking Tour
On the tour date, our meeting point will be at the banks of the Kamo River to initiate our exploration of the captivating geisha district in Kyoto.
As we meander through the streets of the neighborhood, we will uncover the deep-rooted history surrounding these unique artists, whose traditional wooden structures adorn the area.
Our itinerary will include a visit to an okiya, a traditional geisha residence. Here, we will explore the fascinating journey of a geisha. For instance, are you aware that one must undergo an apprenticeship period before achieving the title of geisha? Those in training are referred to as maikos. We will delve into these nuances and highlight some prominent figures in the enchanting realm of geishas.
Throughout the journey, we will also pass by various osha-ya, or tea houses, and gain insight into the traditional music and dance disciplines that geishas learn during their training.
To conclude the tour on a memorable note, we will visit the Yasaka Shrine, one of Japan's most revered and historic temples. The vibrancy of geishas is particularly evident during the festivals held at this shrine, where they play a crucial role in the festivities.
After immersing ourselves in the geisha culture for about 2 hours, we will wrap up our experience at this final location.
