Gion Free Walking Tour
On the day of the activity, we'll meet on the shores of the Kamo River to kick off our free tour of the Gion district. We'll explore the geisha district of Kyoto while discussing the rich history behind these artists, whose traditional wooden houses line the streets.
We will visit an okiya, a traditional geisha house, and explore the journey of a geisha, noting that one must undergo an apprenticeship as a maiko before becoming a geisha. We will also introduce key figures in the geisha world.
Throughout the tour, we'll pass by various osha-ya or tea houses and learn about the traditional music and dance studies that geishas engage in during their training.
To conclude, we'll visit the Yasaka Shrine, one of the oldest and most iconic temples in Japan, where geishas play a vital role during festivals. After 2 hours immersed in the world of geishas, we'll end our tour at this site.
