While in Kyoto, don't miss out on this free walking tour of the Gion neighborhood, to uncover the origins behind the iconic Geishas of Japan.
Gion Free Walking Tour
On the day of the activity, we'll meet on the shores of the Kamo River to kick off our free tour of the Gion district. We will explore the geisha district of Kyoto.
As we walk through the area, we'll discuss the history of the artists whose traditional wooden houses line the streets. Next, we'll visit an okiya, a traditional geisha house, and explore the geisha's journey, including the apprenticeship process where one becomes a maiko. We’ll highlight key figures in the geisha world.
During the tour, we will also pass by various osha-ya or tea houses, and learn about the music and dance studies that geishas undertake during training.
We will conclude our tour at the Yasaka Shrine, one of the oldest and most iconic temples in Japan, where geishas play a significant role during festivals. After 2 hours, we will end at this site.
