Description
On the day of the activity, we will meet at the Paihia Information Centre at the scheduled time. This nature-based tour includes visits to the Kawiti Glowworm Caves, the Hundertwasser Exhibition, and Opua Forest.
We will start at the Glowworm Caves, led by a local Maori guide. The tour lasts around 30 minutes and follows a wooden boardwalk through a 200-metre-long limestone cave system. Participants will see thousands of glowworms illuminating the cave ceiling alongside stalactites and stalagmites. The guide will explain the life cycle of the native New Zealand glowworm and its unique hunting method.
Next, we will travel to Kawakawa, known for the "Hundertwasser Toilets," designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1999 using recycled materials. We will also visit the Hundertwasser Cultural Centre, opened on February 22, 2022, showcasing various artworks and local Maori crafts. Participants can enjoy a fresh cream doughnut in Kawakawa.
Our final stop will be Opua Forest, home to Kauri trees over 1000 years old. The tour concludes after 4 hours back at the starting point, with a photo opportunity at the Waitangi lookout.
