Description

On the day of the activity, we'll meet at the Paihia Information Centre at the scheduled time. From there, we'll begin this nature-based tour of the Kawiti Glowworm Caves, the Hundertwasser Exhibition, and Opua Forest.

Firstly, we'll make our way to the Glowworm Caves. A local Maori guide will lead us through underground caverns to search for glow worms and learn about the caves' history. This tour will last around 30 minutes, following a wooden boardwalk through a 200-metre-long system of limestone caves.

As we walk through the caves, we'll see thousands of glowworms illuminating the cave's stalactites and stalagmites. Our guide will explain the life cycle of the native New Zealand glowworm and its hunting webs.

Next, we'll head to Kawakawa to see the "Hundertwasser Toilets," designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1999 using recycled materials. We will also visit the new Hundertwasser Cultural Centre, which opened on the 22nd of February 2022, showcasing Hundertwasser’s works and local Maori arts. A fresh cream doughnut will be enjoyed before we leave.

Finally, we'll visit the Opua Forest, home to Kauri trees over 1000 years old, then return to the Wharf, passing the Waitangi lookout for photos. This tour will conclude after 4 hours at the starting point. M? te w?!
