Description
On the day of the activity, we will meet at the Paihia Information Centre at the scheduled time. This nature-based tour will include the Kawiti Glowworm Caves, the Hundertwasser Exhibition Centre, and Opua Forest.
First, we will visit the Glowworm Caves. A local Maori guide will lead us through underground caverns for approximately 30 minutes, following a wooden boardwalk through a 200-metre-long system of limestone caves. Participants will observe thousands of glowworms illuminating the cave's ceiling, and the guide will explain the life cycle of the glowworm and its blueish-green tail light.
Next, we will head to Kawakawa to see the Hundertwasser Toilets, an internationally recognized work of art designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in 1999, which incorporates recycled materials. We'll also visit the Hundertwasser Cultural Centre, which opened on February 22, 2022, featuring works by Hundertwasser and local Maori arts. Participants can enjoy a fresh cream doughnut before leaving Kawakawa.
Our final stop will be the Opua Forest, home to Kauri trees over 1000 years old. Afterward, we will return to the Wharf, passing the Waitangi lookout for photos. The tour will conclude after 4 hours at the starting point.
