Tour Itinerary: Explore Giacomo Serpotta's Masterpieces
At the scheduled time, we'll meet at the Oratory of San Lorenzo to begin our journey, focusing on Palermo's most significant Baroque churches, particularly those featuring the work of Giacomo Serpotta, a notable Sicilian sculptor.
Giacomo Serpotta, born in Palermo, is regarded as a precursor to the Rococo style. Our exploration starts at the Oratory of San Lorenzo, located in the Convent of San Francesco d'Assisi.
Here, we will witness stucco sculptures created by Serpotta, showcasing remarkable realism and intricate details. These works illustrate critical moments of St. Lawrence's life, Christian virtues, and numerous cherubs.
The tour continues with visits to the Oratories of Santa Cita and San Domenico. We will examine Serpotta's distinctive style in these sacred spaces and their significance for congregations. Themes such as the Battle of Lepanto, mysteries of the rosary, and Old Testament stories are evident in the sculptural decoration of these sites.
After a three-hour exploration, we will conclude our tour in Piazza San Francesco.
