About Palermo's Capuchin Catacombs

The Palermo Catacombs consist of interconnected galleries carved into volcanic rock, covering around 300 square meters (3230 square feet). These burial chambers hold about 2,000 skeletons and mummified bodies, including the Count of Cagliostro.

Mummies are arranged in different galleries based on gender, social status, and profession. The oldest corridor features the Capuchin Friars in traditional garments, and there is a room for priests in their religious robes.

Other notable areas include the women's corridor, the Chapel of the Crucifix with the bodies of young virgin women, the men's corridor, the Chapel of the Children, and the corridor of families.

Tour Details

We will meet at Piazza Cappuccini to begin our tour of Palermo's Capuchin Catacombs.

Inside, we will explore sections such as the area dedicated to the Capuchin Friars, the tomb of Rosalia Lombardo, and the corridor of notable figures like Filippo Pennino and Lorenzo Marabitti.

Next, we will visit the Sant'Orsola Cemetery, which contains many notable Palermitan figures. Our final stop will be the Palermo Cathedral Catacombs, concluding the tour after 2 hours.
