On this tour into Palermo's catacombs, you'll see the remains of hundreds of mummies and uncover secrets hidden under Sicily's capital city.
About Palermo's Capuchin Catacombs
The Palermo Catacombs feature interconnected galleries carved into volcanic rock, covering an area of around 300 square meters (3230 square feet). These burial chambers hold about 2,000 skeletons and mummified bodies, including the remains of the Count of Cagliostro. Mummies are organized by gender, social status, and profession. The oldest corridor is occupied by Capuchin Friars in traditional garments, while there is also a room for priests in their religious robes. Other areas include the women's corridor, the Chapel of the Crucifix for young virgin women, the men's corridor, the Chapel of the Children, and the corridor of families.
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet at 16 Via dei Benedettini to begin our tour of Palermo's Capuchin Catacombs. Inside, we'll explore the sections, including the area dedicated to Capuchin Friars, the tomb of young Rosalia Lombardo (known as "sleeping beauty"), and the corridor of notable figures such as sculptors Filippo Pennino and Lorenzo Marabitti. After learning about the catacombs, we'll visit the Sant'Orsola Cemetery, which holds many of Palermo's famous figures. Our next stop will be the Palermo Cathedral Catacombs, where more historical figures lie. The tour lasts 3 hours and will conclude at the starting point.
