On this tour of Beijing's hutongs, we'll explore the narrow alleyways of the Old Town in the Chinese capital for a traditional experience.
Beijing's Hutongs
The guided tour will start at the historic Nanluoguxiang Hutong, an 800-meter-long alley from the Yuan Dynasty, where the first hutongs and courtyard houses began to form.
Along this alley, we'll see a mix of old and modern Beijing, featuring trendy bars, restaurants, unique hostels, themed stores, and street vendors. The typical gray houses and century-old trees reflect Beijing's traditional architecture.
Next, we will proceed to Mao'er Hutong, formerly Zitong Temple, which was dedicated to Emperor Wenchang. Here, we will pass Ke Yuan, an iconic garden, and the mansion of the last Empress Wanrong.
Crossing the Yinding Bridge, or Silver Ingot Bridge, leads us to a canal connecting Qianhai Lake and Houhai Lake, in the Shichahai area, known for its quiet hutongs and scenic views of the western mountain.
Finally, we will visit Qianhai Lake and Houhai Bar Street, which were part of the ancient Grand Canal from the Yuan Dynasty. The area features ancient palaces of ministers, temples, and residences of past celebrities.
This 2-hour hutong tour concludes at Houhai Lake.
