On this tour of Beijing's hutongs, we'll explore the narrow alleyways that make up the Old Town of the Chinese capital.
Beijing's Hutongs
We will meet at Exit E of the Nan Luo Gu Xiang metro at the indicated time. The tour will start with a walk to Nanluoguxiang Hutong, an 800-meter (2,624-foot) alley from the Yuan Dynasty, symbolizing the origin of hutongs and courtyard houses.
Along this alley, we will see the mix of old and modern Beijing, featuring trendy bars, restaurants, hostels, themed stores, and street vendors, alongside typical gray houses and century-old trees representing Beijing's traditional architecture.
Next, we will visit Mao'er Hutong or Zitong Temple, a preserved area showcasing the essence of ancient Beijing streets. We will hear stories about notable figures such as Empress Wanrong and Feng Guozhang, who resided in this area.
Finally, we will stop by a narrow canal linking Qianhai and Houhai lakes in the Shichahai area. This serene location will provide a picturesque landscape for our conclusion.
We will conclude the tour after a duration of 2 hours.
