Guided Tour of the Forbidden City with Tiananmen Square (4.5 Hours)
This option features a visit to Tiananmen Square prior to the itinerary already described. We will gather at the Lao She's Teahouse before setting off to discover significant landmarks in contemporary Chinese history.
Our journey will take us through the Tian'anmen Gate to the north, the historical site where Mao Zedong declared the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. Spanning an impressive 100 acres (40.5 hectares), Tiananmen Square holds the title of the largest public square worldwide. Dominating this space is the Monument to the People’s Heroes, a towering granite structure honoring those who sacrificed their lives during pivotal struggles in Chinese history.
Encircling the square are various monumental edifices that emphasize the country's political and cultural significance, including the National Museum of China and the Great Hall of the People, where governmental functions are held. The square also houses the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, enabling visitors to pay respects to the former leader. Over the years, Tiananmen Square has been a witness to critical events, including the 1989 protests, which garnered widespread international attention and resulted in the declaration of Martial Law in Beijing. History is palpable at every corner!
