One of the largest salt deposits in South America is located on the border between Chile and Bolivia. Join us on a day trip to explore the breathtaking landscapes of the Huasco Salt Flats and the Tambillo nature reserve.

Day Trip to the Huasco Salt Flats + Tambillo

We'll pick you up at 8:30 am at your hotel in Pica, and from there we'll travel in a 4x4 vehicle to the Huasco Salt Flat, a nature sanctuary located in the Chilean region of Tarapacá, near the border with Bolivia.

Upon arrival, we'll have a snack that includes an energy bar, nuts, fruit, and a drink either of coffee or herbal tea. After gathering energy, we'll set off on a 1-kilometer (0.62-mile) hike through this salt flat located 4000 meters (13,123 feet) above sea level. The high altitude gives these landscapes a unique beauty.

For about an hour, we'll traverse the Huasco salt flat and look out for native animals such as flamingos, rheas, and various kinds of desert birds. Along the way, we'll discover how these species have adapted to such an arid environment.

After the walk through the Huasco salt flat, we'll hop back in the vehicle and head over to the nearby Tambillo nature reserve to walk through its gorge and check out the various pictographs from pre-Columbian times.

From Tambillo, we'll finally return to your hotel in Pica, where we'll arrive at 1 pm.
