Day Trip to the Huasco Salt Flats + Tambillo
- 5 Stunden
One of the largest salt deposits in South America is on the border between Chile and Bolivia. Join us on a day trip to explore the Huasco Salt Flats and the Tambillo nature reserve.
Day Trip to the Huasco Salt Flats + Tambillo
We'll pick you up at 8:30 am at your hotel in Pica and travel in a 4x4 vehicle to the Huasco Salt Flat, a nature sanctuary in the Chilean region of Tarapacá, near the Bolivia border.
Upon arrival, we'll have a snack that includes an energy bar, nuts, fruit, and a drink (coffee or herbal tea). After gathering energy, we'll set off on a 1-kilometer (0.62-mile) hike through the salt flat located 4000 meters (13,123 feet) above sea level. The high altitude offers unique landscapes.
For about an hour, we'll cross the Huasco salt flat and look for native animals such as flamingos, rheas, and various desert birds. Along the way, we'll learn how these species adapt to this arid environment.
After the hike, we'll head to the nearby Tambillo nature reserve to walk through its gorge and see various pictographs from pre-Columbian times.
We will return to your hotel in Pica, arriving at 1 pm.
